AFV Odyssey Day Workshop

The AFV Odyssey Day Workshop held on April 2 at the Florida Solar Energy Center was a great success. Over 150 attended to learn about Alternative Fuel Technology and saw some of the latest AFVs available from your local dealer (pictures available on the our activity page). The workshop was a joint effort by SC3, the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium, Traviss Technical Center, several auto manufactures and various other organizations. The event covered biodiesel, compressed natural gas, ethanol and hybrid vehicle technologies as a Clean Cities AFV Advancing the Choice workshop. We would like to thank our sponsors NAFTC, DOE, USEPA, Honda, GM, Toyota, Ford, and FSEC. Check our calender next spring for details on the next Odyssey event.

National Clean Cities Conference

The 10th DOE National Clean Cities Conference was held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on May 2-5. Gold Coast Coalition hosted the conference in the Broward County Convention Center with over 900 attendees from around the world. Presentations are available on the National Clean Cities web page which has been redesigned. Headquarters outlined the enhanced program direction for Clean Cities which includes idle reduction and fuel blends. Alternative Fuel News (AFN) is being redesigned and refocused to meet new objectives of the Clean Cities Program. The new publication, Clean Cities News, will replace AFN. This eight-page newsletter will contain shorter articles that focus specifically on program news, coalition news and Clean Cities related activities. It will contain success stories, coordinator profiles, coalition news, EPAct updates, and more.

The Two of our stakeholders, NASA and FSEC presented at the Sciencefest seminar for middle school students. This conference is always a great event and a golden opportunity to interact with national AFV efforts. If you can, join us next years in Palm Springs, CA.

OUC tour at next SC3 meeting

Space Coast Clean Cities Coalition next meeting will not be at FSEC, but will be at OUC Stanton Power Plant Complex in Orlando. If you have not seen the plant, here is your opportunity. Each year, we conduct at least one of our meeting at a new location for a special event or tour of interest to our members.

The June 30 regular meeting will be at a new time, 10:30 am, in order to complete regular business and a tour of the power plant. The meeting agenda is on our calender of event. The plant is located in east Orlando south of SR-508 East/West Expressway at 5100 South Alafaya Trail. For security reasons, attendees must notify Bill Young, SC3 Coordinator, to be placed on a list for check-in at the power plant guard station.

Electric Drive Transportation Association Conference

Right in our neighborhood on September 20-23, will be the 2004 Conference and Exposition of the Electric Drive Transportation Association. The conference showcases electric and hybrid/electric vehicles and fuel cell technologies. There will be an exposition, vehicle ride’n’drive, technical sessions, and workshops on electric transportation technologies. For more information about the conference to be held in Orlando go to www.edtaconference.com.

Sierra Club Launches Hybrid Evolution Campaign

At a time when gas prices are hitting record highs, U.S. oil dependence is increasing, and global warming is heating up, the Sierra Club has launched a new campaign to take clean cars and responsible energy solutions to communities around the country. On Memorial Day, the Sierra Club kicked off its new Hybrid Evolution Campaign which encourages Americans to demand clean cars and clean energy. "We're driving hybrids from town to town to tell people that hybrid cars and renewable energy are a reality. We'll invite people to get behind the wheel and kick the tires." "We call it 'hybrid evolution' because evolution means getting better," said Brendan Bell, Associate Washington Representative for the Sierra Club's Global Warming program. "We have the technology today to clean up
our air and curb global warming.”

The campaign will drive hybrid vehicles along three routes: Key West to Portland, ME,
Chicago to Los Angeles, and Seattle to San Diego. One of the stops is at the Florida Solar Energy Center. The rallies gives Americans the chance to test drive hybrid vehicles, learn about renewable energy. The campaign website - iwillevolve.org - creates
an online community to link the campaign activities around the country. The website
features regular updates and photos from the road tours, ad images, tour
dates, and facts on evolved energy solutions.

As always, check our web page calender monthly for the latest events.
