New CNG fueling station
to support AFV corridors
A
new CNG fueling station is being built in Titusville and
is expected to be completed by March 2001. This station
has a unique design that uses the pressure of the high pressure
of the pipe line to actually drive the compression of the
gas for vehicle use. The fueling station is built at the
"gate station" where it is connected to the Florida
gas transmission line running through this region. No external
power is needed for operation of the compressor, thereby
reducing operating cost as will as equipment cost. Plans
are to have the station completed by March 2001.
The
station is a joint project between NUI City Gas, General
Services Agency at Kennedy Space Center, Florida Department
of Transportation and lead by Motorfuelers. The project
is located in Space Coast Clean Cities Coalition and supported
by its members with funding from the Florida Energy Office.
The coalition is based in Brevard County and covers an area
from Volusia to St. Lucie and from Lake to Brevard County.
The coalition organized a teamed amoung its Federal, State
and public fleets to develop refueling corridors that cross
the coalitions designated area. District 5 of the Florida
Department of Transportation (FDOT) vehicle fleet and Federal
fleets administrated by General Services Agency (GSA) at
Kennedy Space Center have service areas relative to the
area designated for Space Coast Coalition. The fleets travel
mostly north/south along US-1 and I-95 and east/west along
I-4 and SR 50. In harmony with these fleets service routes
and their service areas is the Florida Gas Pipe Line that
crosses our coalition. Twellve viable refueling sites at
approximately 25 miles apart have been identified along
the pipe line that follow these fleet routes thereby creating
refueling corridors.
Initially,
corridor development started with NUI City Gas upgraded
their Rockledge Station, then NASA at Kennedy Space Center
built a new CNG station at their Industry Park followed
by Patrick Air Force Base building a new CNG station near
their Vehicle Depot. This new CNG gate station now under
construction in Titusville is another step towards the completion
of a CNG refueling corridor that will event. With the advent
this new station, NUI City Gas teamed with FDOT, GSA and
other private fleets developed a Memorandum of Understanding
to share fuel stations. FDOT and some other local fleets
are permitted and badged for access to NASA Kennedy Space
Center and Patrick Air Force Base to fuel their vehicles
at these new CNG stations. Both FDOT and GSA AFV vehicles
will be able to venture beyond home base as more and more
station are added along the corridor. Once all of selected
corridor sites have station, CNG vehicles from Gold and
Sun Coast Coalitions will be able to travel across the state.
Put
your thinking cap on for new projects.
The
State Energy Program FY 2001 Special Project announcements
are out. U.S. Department of Energy has made available through
the Florida Energy Office funds for alternative fuel vehicle
projects through Clean Cities Coalitions. There is 3.8 million
dollars available to members of coalition in five categories:
Niche markets, AFV refueling infrastructure, AFV school
buses, AFV training and coordinator. Space Coast Coalition
Members must receive a letter of recommendation from the
