7th National Clean Cities
Conference
This
year's National Clean Cities Conference is from May 13 to
16 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Where the spirit of colonial
patriots and today's alternative fuels revolution join to
exchange issues, initiatives, policy and innovative ideas
on alternative fuels technology.
The
conference will be held in the Pennsylvania Convention Center
with technical sessions and exhibits. Many of the auto manufacturers
will be there to showcase and give rides in their latest
alternative fueled vehicles. You can register on-line or
by fax, but don't delay. If you register by April 13, you
save $100 (on full conference registration).
The
official hotel is the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. Reserve
your room by April 23 for a hotel discount, and enjoy the
convenience of shuttles, taxis, and mass transit services
that will take you from the Philadelphia International Airport
or the train station to the hotel or convention center.

Where
can you get a hydrogen fueled vehicle?
Ask
Addison Bain where to buy a hydrogen fueled vehicle. He
attended the latest General Services Administration (GSA)
Replacement Vehicle Sale in Daytona Beach on December 13,
2000. Two AFVs - one compressed natural gas and the other
hydrogen/compressed natural gas/gasoline - were auctioned
at a government vehicle sale. Addison had previously worked
on a team to developed this car to run on hydrogen, CNG
or gasoline. After the program ended, the converted Ford
Crown Victoria was auctioned to the highest bidder, our
very own - Addison Bain. If you are interested in buying

Can you name two
alternative fuels that are manufactured in Florida?
If
you don't know, here's a hint: they are both liquid. Need
a little more help? They can be made from waste products.
They can be made from agricultural products too. Have you
figured it out? The two fuels are ethanol and bio-diesel.
Bio-diesel has been made in Lakeland, Florida for several
years. The facility is now owned and operated by OceanAir
Environmental. The fuel itself is distributed by WorldEnergy
- (www.worldenergy.net
, 617-889-7300). The ethanol facility has just become operation
again after upgrades to the plant and is owned by Parallel
Products of Florida. For ethanol information call 863-533-9388.
Both fuels meet present automotive standards and are approved
for vehicle use by U.S. EPA.
The
availability of these two fuels means new fueling stations
in our coalition area. The Florida Department of Transportation
has add a bio-diesel station to their vehicle fleet operation
in Deland where they use, on averaged 7,600 gallons per
month. A newly funded Ethanol-85 fueling station is planned
this year for Patrick Air Force Base, which will also be
accessible to Kennedy Space Center vehicles. The number
of ethanol and bio-diesel stations in our area should grow
rapidly with the opening of these two in-state manufacturing
plants.

Clean
fuel florida advisory board releases report
For
over a year, the Clean Fuel Florida Advisory Board has been
working on recommendations for the governor on the use of
alternative fuels in Florida. Some of our Coalition members
are on this Advisory Board and provided input to this report.
The purpose of the Advisory Board is to formulate plans
and provide policy recommendations to the Department of
Community Affairs on how best to introduce and promote the
use of alternative fueled vehicles by government and commercial
fleets as well as private citizens. In this effort, the
Advisory Board looked
at the economic and environmental reasons for expanding
the alternative fuel
vehicle market and obstacles to expanding the market. The
initial findings were issued in a report "Fueling Florida's
Future", which providing a strategic fit of alternative
fuels in Florida. The report was prepared by the Center
for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University
of South Florida and is available from the Department of

It's
that time of year again.
Of
course, its time for the Space Coast Coalition Board of
Directors elections. The nominating committee met on December
11 to make recommendations for the 2001 board members and
officers. On January 24, Dayton Rumbough, Addison Bain,
Roberta Sirmons, John Thomas and Len Mancini were elected
as new members of the board. Elections of officers will
be held on March 19 at the Florida Solar Energy Center.
